Clue Express

A Simple Guide to Solving the Mystery

Objective

Be the first detective to figure out the two culprits in the Case File by answering: Who was the Brains? and Who was the Brawn?

Game Setup

  1. Prepare Cards: Remove the 6 "Driver" cards from the deck. You'll only use the 12 "Brain" and "Brawn" cards for this game.
  2. Create the Case File: Separate the cards into a Brains deck and a Brawns deck. Shuffle each deck, and without looking, take the top card from each. Slide these two cards into the Case File envelope—these are the culprits!
  3. Deal the Clues: Shuffle the remaining 10 cards together and deal them all out to the players. (It's okay if some players have more cards than others).
  4. Mark Your Notebook: Secretly look at your cards and check them off in your Detective Notebook. These characters are innocent, as they are in your hand.

How to Play: A Turn in 3 Steps

  1. Roll the Dice: Roll all 4 dice (3 black Suspect dice and 1 blue Bonus die).
  2. Make a Suggestion:
    • Choose 2 of the 3 suspects shown on the black dice.
    • Place their dice on the "Brains" and "Brawn" squares on the game board.
    • Announce your suggestion, for example: "I suggest it was Mrs. White as the Brains and Mr. Green as the Brawn."
    • Get Clues: Starting with the player to your left, each player tries to prove your suggestion false. If a player has a card that matches one you named, they must secretly show it to you. Only the first player who can show a card does so, and only one card is shown.
    • Secretly check off the card you were shown in your notebook. Your suggestion is now over.
  3. Use the Bonus Die: The blue die gives you a special action to gather more clues. See below for what each symbol means.

Bonus Die Actions

  • Inspect a Card: Choose an opponent and secretly look at one random card from their hand.
  • Ask About the 3rd Die: Ask any player if they have the card for the suspect you did NOT use in your suggestion. If they have it, they must secretly show it to you.
  • Peek at the Case File: Secretly look at the color in the keyhole on the back of the Case File envelope. This reveals the identity of one of the culprits!
  • Make a Free Accusation: Make an official guess about both culprits. Other players try to disprove it just like a regular suggestion. If no one can, you may have solved it! There is no penalty if you're wrong.

How to Win

On your turn, instead of a suggestion, you can make a Final Accusation. This is your one and only chance to win!

  1. Announce who you believe is the Brains and who is the Brawn.
  2. Secretly look at the two cards in the Case File.
  3. If you are right, reveal the cards to everyone. Congratulations, you've solved the case and won the game!
  4. If you are wrong, you are out of the game. You must still show your cards to disprove other players' suggestions, but you cannot take any more turns.

Objective

This is for expert detectives! You must be the first to solve a more complex crime by answering three questions: Who was the Brains?, Who was the Brawn?, and Who was the Driver?

Key Differences from the Basic Game

The Master Detective Game plays just like the basic game, but with a few crucial changes to the setup and gameplay.

Setup Changes

  1. Prepare Cards: Use all 18 cards. Separate them into three decks: Brains, Brawn, and Driver.
  2. Create the Case File: Shuffle each of the three decks. Without looking, take the top card from each deck and put them into the Case File. You now have 3 culprits to find!
  3. Deal the Clues: Shuffle the remaining 15 cards together, deal them out, and secretly mark your innocent cards in your notebook.

Gameplay Changes

  • Making a Suggestion: You still roll 3 suspect dice and place 2 on the board. However, you can now place them on any two of the three available spaces: Brains, Brawn, or Driver.
  • Making an Accusation: When you make a "Free" or "Final" Accusation, you must name a suspect for all three roles (Brains, Brawn, and Driver), placing all 3 of your rolled suspect dice on the board.

How to Win

To win the Master Detective Game, your Final Accusation must correctly name all three cards hidden in the Case File. Good luck, Detective!
