LESSON PLAN: BUILDING THE MESH

Welcome, class. Today's subject is Infrastructure.

Since your area is empty, a single device is useless. A walkie-talkie with no partner is just a paperweight. To start a community, you must become the ISP (Independent Service Provider).

STEP 1: THE "SEED FLEET"

You cannot wait for others to buy hardware. They won't understand it until they see it working. You must acquire the initial hardware stack yourself.

Assignment:

Buy 1x RAK Node (Solar capable, low power)

Teacher's Note: That RAK node you looked at earlier? That is your Repeater. It sips power. Perfect for leaving on a roof.

Buy 2x Heltec v3 (Cheap handhelds)

Teacher's Note: These are for you to loan out to friends. They are cheaper than the NRF-TXT device. You need quantity right now, not just quality.

STEP 2: PHYSICS & GEOGRAPHY

Listen closely: Height is Might.

Meshtastic uses "Line of Sight." If your node is in your basement, you are talking to the walls. If it is on your roof, you are talking to the neighborhood.

Identify the highest point you control.

Roof vent? Attic window? Flagpole? The higher this node goes, the wider your "community" circle becomes.

Deploy the RAK Node as a "Router/Client".

Teacher's Note: Set its role to "ROUTER_CLIENT" in the app. This tells the network "I am stable, rely on me." Put it in a waterproof box with a solar panel.

STEP 3: THE "SOCIAL ENGINEERING"

This is the hardest part. You have the network, now you need the users.

Do not tell people "It's a LoRa mesh network running AES256." Their eyes will glaze over.

Tell them: "Here is a free text communicator for when the power goes out or when we are hiking."

Configure the 2 handhelds to the default channel (LongFast).

Teacher's Note: Do NOT make a private password-protected channel yet. You want to be visible so if a random person buys a node, they see you immediately.

Perform the "Loaner Program".

Teacher's Note: Give a pre-configured node to a friend or neighbor about 1km away. Ask them to put it in a window. Now you have a link. Now you have a network.

CLASS DISMISSED

You are planting a digital tree. At first, it is just you and a silent radio.

But once you put that repeater on the roof, you create a Zone of Coverage. Anyone who enters that zone can join. Build the coverage first, and the users will follow.
