F.A.Q.

Is using Meshtastic illegal?

No. Meshtastic operates on the ISM (Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) bands. These are license-free frequencies available to the public. As long as you use standard hardware and don't modify the radio amplifiers illegally, you are 100% compliant.

How far can I communicate?

It depends purely on Line of Sight.

  • Inside a city (Ground to Ground): 0.5 to 1 mile.
  • Suburbs (House to House): 1 to 3 miles.
  • High Point (Hilltop/Drone): 10 to 50+ miles.

The Record: Users have communicated over 200km between mountaintops. Height is everything.

Can I send photos or videos?

No. The LoRa technology is designed for tiny amounts of data over huge distances. It is like a text-message pager from the 90s. We can send text, GPS coordinates, and very basic telemetry. No photos, no voice.

Do I need a SIM card or Subscription?

Zero. Once you buy the hardware, the network is free. It creates its own signal. You do not need a SIM card, and there is no company to pay a monthly fee to.

Is it private? Can everyone read my texts?

Meshtastic has two modes:

1. Public Channel (Default): Yes, anyone on the default channel can read these messages. This is like CB radio.

2. Private Channels: You can create a named channel (e.g., "CampingTrip") with a pre-shared key. These are encrypted with AES-256. These messages pass through the mesh, but only people with the key can decrypt/read them.

What happens if the grid/power goes down?

This is where Meshtastic shines. The radios run on small batteries (often 18650s) that last for days. If you have a small solar panel, they can run indefinitely. Because they don't rely on cell towers or internet providers, the network stays up as long as the nodes have battery.
